The 2020 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrived at the Plaza on November 14, but its not-so-grand entrance didn’t exactly scream “Christmas in New York.”

At first sight, Twitter users immediately began to comment on the tree’s sparse and underwhelming appearance, also acknowledging how “on brand” it is for 2020.
Could the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree look any worse?

Another user joked that they could “almost hear the sad Charlie Brown Christmas theme playing.”
The person managing Rockefeller Center’s Twitter account replied with a bit of light-hearted defensiveness. “Wow, you all must look great right after a two-day drive, huh? Just wait until I get my lights on! See you on December 2!”
Some took the tree’s side, with supportive messages including “We love you, Tree!” and “Don’t listen to what they say,” (the latter message tweeted by Lowe’s).
The 75 foot Norway spruce was shipped from Oneonta, New York, and will be decorated in the coming days. The official Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place on December 2.
Rockefeller Center’s website states that “There will be no public access to this year’s tree lighting ceremony, however you’re invited to view the live national broadcast “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” from home on NBC.”
Rockefeller Center will announce details about how to visit the tree in the coming weeks. For updates, they suggest signing up for their newsletter.
It’s time to stop chopping down these 100 year old trees so a bunch of tourists can take selfies!!!!
What a beautiful tradition for everyone to see at the world’s crossroads.
We should all take a moment and appreciate this beautiful spectacle, not just for New York but for the world.
Stop chopping down these extra big giant trees. My son, who lives in Pennsylvania has a beautiful giant tree in his backyard. I used to dream of it being at Rockefeller Center until I spent time in his yard with my grandchildren & realized that the tree was home to lots & lots of birds. Leave the trees where they are supposed be, for the birds & the climate.
I completely agree!
The forests of the world are being devastated!!!
There’s no reason we can’t use an artificial tree at Rockefeller Center and save these beautiful real ones from the wood chipper for future generations to enjoy!
…and don’t forget about the owl that was trapped in its (soon to be former) home for 2 days during transport. I love tradition but this one needs to stop. There are other ways to celebrate and ways to entice consumerism in midtown other than killing 100+ year old healthy trees that house many species.
SO TRUE!
What happened to the beautiful international flags that represent so many countries??
