The MTA has launched a memorial to honor those they’ve lost to COVID-19. “Travels Far” is a digital art installation which displays portraits of transit workers shared by their families, with the colors of their former transit lines as a backdrop to each portrait.

The memorial was launched on Monday, January 5, and will run until Sunday, February 7. It will be displayed as an 8 minute video on 138 three-panel digital screens at 107 subway stations across the city.

“Travels Far,” named after the poem by former Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith, will be on display at each station at 10:30am, 2:30pm and 8:30pm daily.
A video of the project, as well as photos of many of the MTA workers who’ve died from COVID, are also displayed on the MTA’s website.
According to an MTA press release, 136 of its employees have fallen victim to COVID-19 since the pandemic first began.
“To honor and pay tribute to those who have been lost too soon, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority today launched an engaging visual memorial to those employees, heroes who dedicated their lives to moving New Yorkers through the city and region.”
