Hachi Maki has opened its doors at 522 Columbus Avenue, just off the corner of 85th Street. Named for the headband that sushi chefs wear (hachimaki) and the lucky number eight (hachi), the new restaurant is owned by Jeremy Wladis of The Restaurant Group, who operates Good Enough To Eat next door.
Two other restaurants are currently offering delivery and take-out from this same address: The Great Burrito and King Wang’s. A press representative tells us The Great Burrito will continue to offer takeout and delivery, while the future of King Wang’s is currently up in the air.

After reading about Hachi Maki on I Love The Upper West Side we decided to give it a try this evening. All we can way is WOW!!! Sushi will never be quite the same. Everything was fabulous from start to finish. It takes just a minute to learn the idea behind what’s going on here, but the entire staff is ready and willing to explain the concept. To begin we had the Sunomono seaweed salad and the Furikake Fries — both were amazing. But what was waiting came as a total surprise. You think you’ve had sushi before but guess again!!! The open sushi rolls stood out as the best sushi we’ve had EVER! We ordered both the “Spicy Set” of 5 hand rolls and the “Specialty Set” of 5 and were totally blown away!!! It would be hard to say which we loved more — but if I were pressed I’d have to say the Spicy Set won out by a hair. For dessert we ordered both the creme puff and the “cheese cake”. The Cheese “cake ” was astonishing!!! The space is beautiful and the staff couldn’t have been better. We can’t wait to return!!!
