Trailer Drops For Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”

Steven Spielberg’s remake of the 1961 classic West Side Story is expected to hit theaters in December 2021, and a trailer for his rendition of the film was first released at the Oscars on Sunday night.

Just to see a side by side, here’s the trailer for the original film:

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the musical examines the rivalry between two street gangs and takes place on 68th between West End and Amsterdam Avenues, which is now occupied by Lincoln Towers.

Spielberg told Vanity Fair that as a kid growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, the film’s soundtrack by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim “… was actually the first piece of popular music our family ever allowed into the home. I absconded with it—this was the cast album from the 1957 Broadway musical—and just fell completely in love with it as a kid. West Side Story has been that one haunting temptation that I have finally given in to.”

The movie will star Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria. Filming wrapped up in October 2019, and it was originally expected to be released by Christmas 2020, but faced delays due to the pandemic. It is now expected to be in theaters December 10, 2021.
