Agave, a Mexican and Southwestern restaurant with locations in Kips Bay and Greenwich Village, has opened at 688 Columbus Avenue, between 93rd and 94th streets — formerly home to Gabriela’s Restaurant and Tequila Bar, which closed in September 2019 after 15 years.
Agave – which also has the words “Restaurant and Tequila Bar” in its full name – offers a range of margaritas, sangria, and non-alcoholic mixed drinks. It’s gotten quite a few press accolades, including a mention in Thrillist’s list of America’s top tequila bars.

A bottomless brunch offers 1.5 hours of unlimited drinks for $35 (with an extra $5 for flavored margaritas and a 20% gratuity included, the menu states). Agave’s daily happy hour (4-7pm) is also a big draw.
“Agave is where you go if you want to get drunk at brunch, but you don’t want to feel like you time-warped to freshmen year of college,” writes The Infatuation about the eatery’s West Village location.
Some interesting dishes include corn-crusted, Cajun-spiced calamari; empanadas filled with spinach and Spanish style ricotta; and gluten-free shrimp ceviche.
Agave also offers catering and hosting for private parties, as well as some seasonal onsite events (National Taco Day and Halloween celebrations are listed at both locations).
A representative from the UWS restaurant tells me their hours are Monday-Friday from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. They are also offering a weekend brunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ninety minutes all you can drink for 35 bucks is kind of crass don’t you think? And the web site says five dollars extra if you want flavored margaritas instead of plain so many drinks are people going feel obligated to down for 40 dollars in an hour and a half?
How do you pronounce Agave? AH-GAV-AY?
The loss of Gabriellas was among the largest in the area, so I hope Agave is a good replacement.
Hoping this won’t lead to a lot of staggering drunks on our block.
The loss of Under the Stairs and Elizabeth’s brought flavor to the neighborhood. Another Mexican bar
There one on 88 Street and another on Amsterdam Avenue lots of luck
