Underground Speakeasy Offers Free Happy Hour, Live Music

Here’s one way to start your week off right!

Beneath a popular Upper West Side bar, you’ll find a rustic hideout filled with live music and libations.

The Speakeasy Sessions take place on the lower level of The Gin Mill at 442 Amsterdam Avenue (between 81st and 82nd streets) every Monday evening, with a free happy hour from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. (well drinks and draft beers) followed by a live, cover-free concert from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The lineup of performers spans genres from rock to jazz to folk and beyond, and this is certainly no amateur hour: these artists have played alongside prominent figures like Lady Gaga, The Roots, Harry Connick, Jr., Gladys Knight, Leslie Odom Jr., Billy Ray Cyrus, Natalie Merchant and Michael McDonald (to name just a few).

Just look at these people. They’re loving it!

Some noteworthy artists you’ll find on the schedule include Augie Haas, one of the most in-demand trumpet players in New York; Wayne Wilson, a singer and actor with a long list of television, film and theatre performances on his resume; Jim Campilongo, a seasoned solo guitarist known best for his instrumental albums; Lauren Davidson, a country singer getting a massive volume of urban gigs; Casino People, a husband-and-wife indie-pop-country-folk duo (the husband, Ryan, is also a bartender at Gin Mill, upstairs); and Geoff Burke, a saxophonist who’s performed with a long list of jazz icons.

The Speakeasy Sessions are sponsored by Harlem Standard, a bourbon brand powered by its love of “Harlem, Live Music and Exceptional Whiskey.”
