Fact: There’s no shortage of fantastic food options on the Upper West Side, but some establishments simply rise above the rest. As the neighborhood is a diverse melting pot of the world’s most covetable cuisines, standing out can be tricky — yet Aves effortlessly understands the assignment. The area’s newest upscale Chinese restaurant is already making waves, and it’s easy to see why.

Pea Sprouts
Conveniently located at 102 West 86th Street (just west of Columbus Avenue), Aves recently opened its doors in the former La Mirabelle space. While Chinese cuisine certainly attracts its share of purists loyal to their longstanding favorites, this buzzy eatery is providing a fresh take on traditional dishes and doing so in a dazzling modern setting.

Aves (translated from “birds” in Latin) takes direct inspiration from peacocks and bamboo, a decor decision which is immediately apparent. Working alongside a renowned international interior design firm, the Aves team has executed a sleek space framed by a striking ceiling meant to channel a peacock’s tail. Meanwhile, the complementary colors that adorn the walls blend a peacock’s trademark teal, blue and navy hues. It sets the scene for a luxurious (yet comfortable) dining experience.
As for the dining itself, you can expect to find elevated fare packed with familiar flair. The menu is heavily influenced from various regions of China and includes comfort classics like soup dumplings, Kung Pao chicken and beyond. Though untraditional, options like Tuna Tartare and Braised Pork Belly add an extra dash of elegance to the mix.
That said, while all dishes have been well-received, the most popular have been the Steamed Fish (a delicate, flavorful option coated in a scallion soy glaze) and the tender Peking Duck. “Served in a stunning birdcage, our duck is crispy, golden and roasted to perfection,” Aves states. “Enjoy the iconic flavors — tender duck with that signature crispy skin, paired with thin pancakes, hoisin sauce, and fresh veggies.” Delicious is an understatement!

Another signature option is the Fish Fragrant Eggplant, a beloved Sichuan dish that’s “all about balance, combining spicy, sweet, tangy and savory notes into a harmonious explosion of flavors.” Lucky for the vegetarians in your life, there’s no fish involved; this will also serve as an excellent side dish.

Already garnering rave reviews (“Excellent food, friendly service, moderate prices. We will be back,” one ecstatic UWS’er proclaimed), Aves has consistently attracted high-profile guests and local influencers. “We have guests almost once a week telling us ‘there’s no good Chinese in this area’; many former regulars of La Mirabelle are thrilled to see us in the space,” owner Leon Liu told us exclusively.

Steamed Oysters
As noted, fans are already flocking to Aves. “Interior is beautifully designed. Food is delicious. The price is reasonable. Manager Leon is very friendly and recommended their popular dishes for us. If you like modern Asian cuisine or simply looking for a stylish place to enjoy a meal, Aves NYC is a new place on the Upper West Side to try,” one savvy Yelp reviewer wrote. Another dubbed it a “great new neighborhood spot,” praising the fresh vibes, fantastic food and shouting out the delicious cocktails (enjoy $8 drinks and 50% off oysters during happy hour, Monday-Friday from 5-6:30 p.m.!).
