We’re not in New York City anymore, folks! Well, we are, but it sure doesn’t look like it. The Central Park Zoo brings a bit of wildlife to one of the best parks in NYC!
The zoo features seven exhibits which include Allison Maher Stern Snow Leopard, Central Garden & Sea Lion Pool, Grizzly Bear & Treena’s Overlook, Polar Circle, Temperate Territory, Tisch Children’s Zoo, and Tropic Zone: The Rainforest.
Over 16 animal species are housed within the exhibits, including snow leopards, California sea lions, grizzly bears, and tufted, gentoo, king and chinstrap penguins, as well as red pandas, snow monkeys, patagonian cavy, nubian goats, pot-bellied pigs, emerald tree boas, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, victoria-crowned pigeons, and poison dart frogs.
The children’s zoo offers an exclusive experience focused on those six years old and younger, and features a petting zoo, daily shows at the Acorn Theatre and the city’s only cow.
Once they visit the animals, guests can head over to the zoo’s 4-D theater to view a 3-D film that is coupled with “built-in sensory effects” for an “immersive” film experience.
For those looking for a more hands on experience, penguin and sea lion feedings take place daily.
After the animals have eaten, guests can chow down at the Dancing Crane Cafe. However, the restaurant, which is open to visitors of the zoo and Central Park, hasn’t received the best reviews. Many have complained about cold, unappetizing food, but others have said that it gets the job done. Its menu features chicken fingers, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, and some fresher options like salads and sandwiches.
The zoo provides multiple educational programs and camps for adults, children, students and scouts of all ages. A variety of field trips, including self guided and zoo guided tours, classes, and theatre performances are also offered.
If you’re planning a wild birthday party, several packages are offered for first birthdays through adults.
The Central Park Zoo is located at 64th Street and 5th Avenue, with its entrance on the Upper East Side. It is open year round, with spring and summer being peak seasons. Hours of operation vary by season.
“Total Experience” tickets can be purchased online, where guests will receive a 10 percent off discount, or at the gate, along with general admission and 4-D theater tickets. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more people are available.
