Lowe’s closed its Upper West Side NYC location this weekend. The retailer has announced it will be closing 51 stores around the country and in Canada. Their Upper West Side store was located at 2008 Broadway (on the corner of 68th Street). And it really happened all of a sudden. The lettering has already been removed from the entrance.

A sign on the door instructs local customers to go to their store in North Bergen, New Jersey, for all pick ups.
Lowe’s said in a press release that this location, along with fifty others, have been underperforming.
All 51 of the stores on their list will be closing on or before February 1st. This includes their other Manhattan store, located in Chelsea.
The Upper West Side Lowe’s originally opened in August of 2015. Before Lowe’s opened here, the Food Emporium occupied the space.
We’re used to seeing mom and pop stores shutting down due to high rents. It’s certainly a sign of the times when big box retailers are closing as well.

It’s a huge space, so it seems like a limited number of businesses would be contenders for it.
