After a brief closure by the Department of Health, Barney Greengrass has reopened their doors.
The iconic Jewish appetizing shop and deli failed a DOH inspection on Thursday of last week. During this inspection, they racked up over 51 points in health violations. Among these points were evidence of live mice and roaches, inadequate personal cleanliness, and other unsanitary conditions.

The closure followed one day after the busiest day of the year for Barney Greengrass – Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. And while Barney Greengrass will reopen if conditions have improved after re-inspection, this is not the first instance of health inspection issues for “The Sturgeon King”. Public records indicate ongoing mice problems since 2016.
Now that The Sturgeon King has reopened for business, fans of the establishment (the ones who are still fans) can get their fish spreads and bagels once again.
