Another Dumpling Spot Bites the Dust at Amsterdam Storefront

EA Dumpling closes

EA Dumpling has officially closed at 201 Amsterdam Avenue, between 69th and 70th Streets, after less than a year in business. The closure follows Didi Dumpling’s brief tenure at the same space, having shuttered in March 2023 after just seven months.

From potstickers to noodles and spicy wontons, EA Dumpling, a Taiwanese-style shop with two remaining east side locations, offered a menu similar to its predecessor. It fared slightly better in reviews, earning 4.1 stars on Google and 3.5 on Yelp (out of 5), compared to Didi’s 3.8 and 2.5. Still, many customers were unimpressed. Complaints centered on small portions, lackluster flavor, and high prices. “You are better off going across the street to H Mart, the Korean market that just opened, and choosing from a vast array of yummy foods; just buy the dumplings there and take them home!” wrote one local in a 1-star review.

The space is small, with seating for about six. EA relied on a touchscreen kiosk for quick ordering. The last Google review, posted three weeks ago by Angel M., praised the restaurant with five stars: “This was the best restaurant I’ve been to in the neighborhood, hands down. Everything was amazing.” They were especially fond of the Garlic Soy Sauce, suggesting it should be bottled and sold.

EA’s name is an abbreviation of a Chinese saying that translates to ‘from the ocean to the mountains to the rest of the world.’

The restaurant’s owner, Sam Lin, also operates Coco Fresh Tea & Juice at 124 West 72nd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. Lin has not publicly commented on the closure.

The address has now seen two dumpling shops come and go in under two years, raising questions about whether the location itself is to blame or if the neighborhood’s appetite for dumplings isn’t as strong as expected.

Three times a charm?
