We’re approaching the end of the year. And that means it’s time to look back and reflect. As usual, popular publications are sharing their lists of the best of 2018, including restaurants. And a handful of Upper West Side restaurants can be found on these lists! Read on to see the best UWS restaurants of 2018 (according to the big guys).
Best in the USA
Open Table recently published it’s list of best restaurants in America for 2018. The list includes 100 restaurants which are chosen based on public reviews (over 12 million in total to determine the winers). One of the chosen was Sushi Kaito, located at 244 West 72nd Street. They first opened in 2017 and their business model has obviously been working; they offer very limited reservation times and only two menu options! The vast majority of their fish comes straight from Japan.
Another winner, while not exactly on the Upper West Side (but we say close enough) was Marea, located at 240 Central Park South (at 59th Street). Also on our list of the best restaurants near Lincoln Center, Marea is a high-end Italian restaurant specializing in seafood dishes.
Another list published by Open Table was fir the most scenic restaurants in America of 2018. One of their inclusions was Robert Restaurant, located above the Museum of Art and Design at 2 Columbus Circle. We agree with this choice! In addition to the direct view of Columbus Circle and Central Park, the interior of this restaurant is stunning. We included them in our own list of prettiest restaurants, too!
Okay, here’s another from Open Table: the best restaurants for al fresco dining. While most Upper West Siders will agree that their food is not that impressive, Tavern on the Green definitely deserved to be included in this list. After all, it’s in Central Park! Whether you’re dining at this fancy eatery or eating out of a brown paper bag on a bench, this is always a great place to be.
Here’s a photo from Tavern on the Green’s Bubble Garden this year.
Pete Wells of the New York Times published a list of his ten favorite dishes from 2018. One comes from the Upper West Side’s Mama’s Too, which opened at 2750 Broadway (between 105th and 106th) towards the end of 2017. His pick was their square pepperoni slice, which I’ll admit I just tried for the first time about a month ago. The meat itself is super crispy and the dough is extremely thick and fluffy. I personally preferred their cherry tomato square slice, but everything at this small place is delightful, including the very New York attitudes of the counter staff. I’ve listed Mama’s Too at the very top of our list of best Upper West Side pizza places.
Our last mention comes from theworlds50best.com, which has named Per Se as the 81st best restaurant in the world. Per Se is Chef Thomas Keller’s New American and French restaurant at the Time Warner Center (which by the way won’t be the Time Warner Center for much longer). The fancy eatery offers nine-course tasting menus and has been featured countlessly throughout food blogs and “best of” lists.
