The cold is upon us, which can mean a lot of things. For this guy, it means it’s time to enjoy some whiskey at the best whiskey bars on the Upper West Side. And a few other things. Like leaves and pumpkin lattes. But … whiskey is so good!! And I for one am happy that I don’t have to travel far to enjoy some great whiskey at some great bars. I should also mention that two of the bars on this list are also rated among the best bars on the Upper West Side !
424 Amsterdam Ave
Scottish whiskey bar with over 250 whiskey selections (and most notably a fantastic scotch selection). This place is sleek with a high end feel, making it ideal for client meetings (if you’re in the type of business that calls for hard drinks!).
Very pleasant, friendly and knowledgeable bar staff.
Their food menu consists of a number of small plates … with their scotch eggs being among the most popular.
And their reviews are stellar: 100% of their Facebook reviews, at the time of this writing, are 5 stars, and they have 4.5 stars on both Yelp and Google.
998 Amsterdam Ave
Opened in December of 2015 (by the same owners as Caledonia Bar). This is a cozy Manhattan Valley pub with a large selection of American whiskeys, great cocktails and frequent tastings.
Snacks included on their menu include chicken liver pate, marinated olives and a cheese board.
The Dead Poet
450 Amsterdam Ave
Irish bar with tons of Irish whiskey, free popcorn, famously fresh Guinness, and widely popular signature cocktails named after literary figures. A narrow, cozy space at the bar, but they have a back room with high tables. Dead Poet also has rotating happy hour specials. I can’t say enough about how much I love this place.
