Bourke Street Bakery will be permanently closing its doors after December 24, the Australian bakery announced on Instagram on Thursday. Thanks to Jess M. for the tip.

“It has been an absolute pleasure serving each and every one of you here on the Upper West Side, and we sincerely hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you at one of our other city locations,” Bourke Street wrote. The bakery can also be found in Nomad, Chelsea and Midtown East, as well as Jersey City.
The “Aussie-born, NYC-based organic sourdough bakery” opened an outpost in December 2021 at 313 Amsterdam Avenue between 74th and 75th streets, replacing Piccolo Cafe. It’s since become a popular destination for its sausage rolls, meat pies, croissants, coffee and more.
Bourke Street Bakery opened its first NYC location (at 15 East 28th Street) in 2019, and has since gotten quite a bit of love from the press – including praise from Eater and the New York Times. They’ve also developed an impressive social media following.
For anyone deeply inconvenienced by this forthcoming closure, an independent coffee shop called Frame opened its doors in early November – just a couple doors down at 305 Amsterdam Avenue. This is Frame’s second location – its first opened on the Upper East Side in May 2022 – and it’s so far gotten positive reviews for its cozy ambiance, tasty beverages and croffles (croissant waffle hybrids).
We reached out to Bourke Street Bakery for further comment. While they weren’t able to get into the reason behind the closing, a rep told us it “wasn’t an easy decision,” adding, “We’ve cherished the time we’ve spent on the Upper West Side these past couple of years and are sad to say goodbye.”
Too bad, the breads are excellent.
But the atmosphere inside is oppressive.
I’m obsessed with their ‘Everything Croissant’, and would have ordered lunch into our office multiple times during the week, but they had OUTRAGEOUS delivery fee’s! And I only worked 14 blocks straight up Amsterdam. This left me only the weekends to satisfy my craving. I will miss those croissants 🙁
Not surprised – mediocre at best with much competition in the area, For good pastries and bread walk a few steps north to Macaroon’s and if you want Australian coffee keep walking north to Blue Stone Lane. Both have friendly service
Oh noooo!! As an Aussie living on the UWS, this is heartbreaking!! I really hope they open another UWS location soon! Going to miss the coffee, sausage rolls and ability to but vegemite so much!! Such a taste of home and such a convenient location
