If you walk by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at 125 Columbus Ave (corner of 65th), you’ll see one of the ten “Giving Machines” that were installed for this year’s “Giving Tuesday”, Patch first reported.
While it looks like a regular vending machine, what you’re actually purchasing is a gift for someone in need.
You’ll see an image and description of the item, but it stays in the machine after your purchase.
Gifts range in price from $3 to $250, and include products ranging from clean water to a Metrocard to livestock.
All proceeds from product purchases go to the charity or organization associated with each product. As of now, 2019 donations have reached slightly over $1 million.
The machines will be in their UWS location through the end of December.
The church has teamed up with UNICEF, Water For People, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York West Side Campaign against Hunger, CARE, Art Start and WaterAid for this project.
