During the summer of 2023, police officers discovered an 84-year-old woman dead at an apartment building on the Upper West Side. Now, her death is being ruled a homicide.
Police received a call about a woman in need of assistance on Monday, July 17 at about 9 p.m. They arrived to 70 West 93rd Street (off Columbus Avenue) to find the elderly woman “unconscious and unresponsive.”
EMS responded and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
The deceased has been identified as 84-year-old Ana Asencio.
We’ve reached out to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) for more information and will update this article when additional details are provided.
UPDATE: NY Daily News reports that Asencio was discovered lying face-up in her bedroom with bruises on her neck and “trauma injuries on her head” from being choked, according to the OCME.
While no arrests have been made, police say she was the “victim of elder abuse.” A neighbor told the Daily News that Asencio, a retired public school teacher, “suffered from dementia and lived in the filthy apartment with her son.”
The neighbor, 72-year-old Migdalia Rodriguez, would bring her food and help her go to the bathroom as she had trouble moving around, according to the report.
