A chalk-written announcement on the sandwich board outside of Effy’s Cafe announced its permanent closing. Our reader, Dee, told us about the closing and sent us the pic below.
The casual kosher eatery at 104 West 96th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, served a variety of Mediterranean and Israeli dishes, and was a popular spot for breakfast and brunch.
We first announced the closing on our Instagram feed, and in less than an hour, it was clear from the comments how much Effy’s will be missed.

We are SO sad. We loved Effy’s and were regulars. It’s not fair. The UWS will become a ghost town. We will truly miss you, you were our favorite place.
Oh no… I really hope they can rebound. I loved eating in that place. So homelike.
So sad to hear this. I loved Effy’s and went there at least twice a week for lunch. Lovely people and good food. Especially loved the waitresses. Please reconsider.
they have on on east 100th and lex
My husband and I had just discovered Effy’s as we apartment hunted during the winter, and we’ve been excited about going there after we move to 97th and CPW. So disappointed. We will check out another location, but we were really looking forward to it being a neighborhood go-to for us.
Come back little Effy- Wonderful food, well priced. Always busy so very surprised it is closing permanently. Will be sorely missed.
I live down the block from Effy’s, and they are STILL OPEN!!!
As of 7/17/2023, they are quite most certainly open !!!
