A stunning residence on the Upper West Side, known as one of Riverside Drive’s “seven beauties,” has changed hands for less than half the price it was listed for in 2023. Known as the “River Mansion,” the five-story residence was the childhood home of influencer and entrepreneur Hannah Bronfman, daughter of Seagrams heir Edgar M. Bronfman and actress and philanthropist Sherry Bronfman. Edgar purchased the home in 1979 for $5.6 million.

Fans of HBO’s The Vow may recognize the Bronfman last name; Edgar’s half-sister, Clare Bronfman, pled guilty to charges related to her involvement with Albany-based cult NXIVM in 2019.
The home hit the market in 2023 for $24 million, but the price was soon cut to $20 million before the property was taken off the market altogether. The Gilded Age property was re-listed for $12.99 million in May of this year.

The Beaux-Arts brick and limestone residence was built around the turn of the 20th century. It features five bedrooms, five bathrooms, two-and-a-half baths along with a parlor, wine room, library, two kitchens, a 2,000-square foot roof deck overlooking the Hudson River, and more. The home hosted the New York City Kips Bay Decorator Show House in 2023.

Previous owners include Julia Marlowe, a Shakespearean actress who purchased the home for $68,000 in 1903, and a doctor who committed suicide there in 1935. It was briefly owned by painter Michael de Santis who tragically died of a brain tumor just six months after moving in.
According to Traded NY, the buyer at $9.995 million is the Hillcrest Company, a California-based real estate investment firm. The company has not yet responded to a request for comment on its plans for the River Mansion.

Hmmm. Zillow shows a sale price of $7,300,000 for it not $9.9.
Is it land marked? Troubling that it is not a historic district. The combo of City of Yes + an out of state “investment” firm could easily spell the demise of a rare and beautiful building. I hope I am completely wrong.
