DSW announced the closure of its Upper West Side location in late 2021 (Google Maps)
When it was first reported that the massive DSW at the corner of 79th and Broadway was shuttering after a decade-long run shilling discount designer footwear in late 2021, Upper West Siders wondered what would fill the 30,000-square-foot space.

Now, we have an answer: P.C. Richard & Son.
You may be thinking, “Isn’t there a P.C. Richard & Son a mere seven blocks uptown where I can buy everything from a microwave to a mattress?” And while you would be correct, the electronics behemoth is relocating slightly downtown (emphasis on slightly — the address will shift from 2372 Broadway to 2220 Broadway) after an approximately twenty year run.
According to Commercial Observer, P.C. Richard inked a deal with the Zabar family (who own the building, located just steps from their eponymous emporium of culinary delights) to take over the vacant rental. Newmark (NMRK)’s Ariel Schuster and Mitch Heifetz represented the landlord, though no specific terms regarding rent price or lease length were revealed.

“P.C. Richard & Son is excited to continue to serve the customers of the Upper West Side for many years to come,” a representative for commercial real estate giant Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), who handled P.C. Richard’s side of the deal, said in a statement. The largest chain of family-owned appliance retailers in the U.S., P.C. Richard boasts 66 stores, with the majority in Long Island. The new outpost is allegedly set to open at some point this year.
Prior to its DSW era, 2220 Broadway played host to another haven for bargain hunters on a mission — Filene’s Basement, which lasted from 1993 to 2011, when it filed for bankruptcy. Back then, a commercial real estate broker promised “fashion-forward” tenants would take over the joint. Shoppers will have to keep waiting.
This is great news. It means that parcel won’t be another towering residential building for the foreseeable future.
Right – because we don’t need any more homes on the UWS. Oh wait, we do. And if you’re angry because you don’t get free rent handouts whenever new construction happens, go live in Queens where it’s cheaper. Time moves on…
I pay my rent. On time. Every month even during the pandemic. Don’t make assumptions. I just don’t appreciate new towers where the cheapest unit is $2m.
This is a “LIKE!” No, to more of those inappropriately scaled developments!
I remember when this space housed Woolworth’s, a very different era and time.
Good to know PC Richard’s is doing so well!
Ugh. The last place I’d go to browse, find a treat, look for inspo. The very last.
So now the question will be who will move into PC’s current location
Why couldn’t it have been a ping-pong parlor like Marty Reisman’s old place on 96th St.?
Kidding. Don’t @ me.
This is wonderful news that we’re getting a great neighbor moving into the hood.
You are welcome to your PC Richards I’m glad to have you as a neighbor.

What about the space PC Richard’s is in now? How many years will that huge space now sit empty?
Tearing down that building for new residential.
They are tearing down the Belnord? LOL. I think you may be confused.
That’s right!
