A long-empty commercial space at the Apthorp building on Broadway between 78th and 79th streets is now home to a sweet new business. Gelato Factory is open at 2191 Broadway, which was previously home to Apthorp Pharmacy before it moved a block south in 2019.

The store is Gelato Factory’s second location (joining another in New Jersey) and brings an impeccably decorated and brightly lit addition to a stretch of Broadway recently plagued by closed storefronts. The establishment offers a multitude of creative gelato flavors that are made fresh every day.
According to employees, the most popular flavors are Creme Brulee and Crunchy Pistachio. Some other flavors include Ferrero Rocher, Caramel Hazelnut, Kinder Bueno, Cherry Mania, Rum Raisin and Lotus Biscoff. Options for toppings include cookie dough, sprinkles, gummy worms and melted milk chocolate.

Gelato Factory offers three sizes (small, medium and large) ranging from $6.99 to $10.99. They also offer two sizes for take-home options (small and large; $18 and $36) which come with multiple flavors, gelato spoons, cups and cones. The take-home options are designed for groups or small parties and are packaged in an insulated container. A “New Year Special” – $9.99 for the small take-home container – is available for a limited time.
Gelato Factory also offers milkshakes and soft drinks and began offering crepes in early January. The storefront is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.
The price gouging continues among gelato purveyors on the UWS. Let’s face it, it’s really $7.61 with tax for two scoops up to $11.96 for a large. That’s just a disgrace. That Imperioli bar – Scarlet – over on Amsterdam Ave with its alleged “lines around the block” and their proudly listed $24 drinks actually means….drum roll for sheer disgusting price gouging…..$120 for two people, for two drinks (no appetizers, no food, no dessert) and since we all have to pay it, that includes tax and a 15% tip (and who leaves 15% anymore?) with 20% tip that brings the bill to $125….for nothing more than drinks!! WTF as “Christaphuh” would say.
Those prices aren’t what I’d spent, either, but we’re free not to go. And better this than another gray market weed store.
Way too expensive. That’s good, so I won’t be tempted. The flavors do sound good but I don’t understand why it costs so much.
Apthorp is charging them an arm and a leg for the space so they probably had to adjust their pricing
They should have let Apthorp Pharmacy keep the place. It had been there for so many years. Instead, an overpriced gelato place. Thanks, Apthorp!
These prices are pretty standard for gelato places. Regular ice cream scoops at nearby stores are equally overpriced.
I love real Italian gelato but why do so many places muck it up with candy and sickly sweet syrups?
The passionfruit was terrific. I try to support local businesses so if it costs a few bucks more here and there, its fine to keep them afloat vs another empty storefront
