Gigi Cafe is closing on Tuesday, November 27th, according to the lady I just got my iced coffee from. Their Upper West Side location, at 2067 Broadway (between 70th and 71st Streets), served salads, soups and sandwiches, and was a busy lunch spot (for anyone lucky enough not to be stuck in a Midtown office).
When I asked her if it was the high rent which forced them to end their lease, she seemed confident in her reply. “Yes”.
I don’t know when they first opened exactly, but their earliest Yelp review was from May of 2007.
They ended their run on the UWS with a Yelp score of 3 out of 5, and a Google score of 4.1 out of 5. So some of us will clearly miss them more than others.
This news comes soon after the nearby Tasty Cafe closed their doors.
For a few remaining options in this category, and within the immediate proximity of Gigi Cafe, feel free to try:
- Cafe 71 at 2061 Broadway (70th Street)
- Andy’s Deli at 295 Amsterdam (74th). Andy’s is more of a deli, but they have good sandwiches and salads.
- Columbus Gourmet Food at 261 Columbus (off the corner of 72nd Street).
Gigi Cafe has another location at 307 Seventh Avenue, between 27th and 28th Streets.
