Hospital for Veterinary Surgery
The Hospital for Veterinary Surgery – “Manhattan’s first and only surgery-exclusive veterinary hospital” – has opened its doors on the Upper West Side.
The 10,000 square-foot facility occupies two floors at The AIRE on Amsterdam Avenue and West 67th Street, just steps north of Lincoln Center, and welcomed its first patients on Monday, July 31.

Dr. Matthew Raske is the founding medical director and primary surgeon. Previously with the Animal Specialty Center in Yonkers, Raske is also a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP), which enables him to offer therapeutic services akin to human physical therapy for pets.
“Our surgical team and clinical staff are familiar faces here in the local veterinary community, and the reception from our colleagues has been very positive and enthusiastic,” said Dr. Raske in a press release. “We are delighted to provide the increased and timely access to veterinary surgical procedures that our New York area pet parents need at this time.”
The veterinary team specializes in advanced surgical procedures across three main categories: orthopedics (bones, joints), soft tissue/oncologic surgery (skin, body masses, cardiovascular system, GI/urogenital/respiratory), and minimally invasive surgery (both orthopedic and soft tissue).
Alongside Dr. Raske is Dr. Andrew Kyles, who previously served as a senior surgeon at specialty hospitals in New York City and Long Island. Raske and Kyles bring a combined 35 years of experience as board-certified veterinary surgeons.
The space comes with four operating suites, two radiology imaging suites, a 128-slice CT scan and a C-arm machine for advanced fluoroscopic imaging. There is also an on-site overnight veterinarian to provide continuous care and support.
Is it just me, or have there been a bunch of new Vets opening in the hood over the last few years? Don’t get me wrong – hopefully it helps bring some of the costs down a bit, but it seems like at least 4 or 5 have opened in the area….
