How The Browning School Redefines Education for Boys

Families on the Upper West Side have many choices for their son’s education: public vs. private, religious vs. secular, or K-12 vs. a school for a smaller age range. But have you considered choosing a single-sex school?

“At a boys’ school, a sense of belonging creates a school experience where boys are ready to grow and learn,” says Eric Ogden who leads Grades K-4 at The Browning School. “All students learn more effectively when they are known and cared for by their teachers, and we focus on how boys learn to tailor a program just for them.”

A rigorous elementary curriculum is the foundation of the K-12 Browning education. In addition to the core subjects of language arts, social studies, math, science, and world language, boys participate in signature programs such as public speaking, a STEAM-based Invention Convention, a cross-grades “buddy program,” community service, and yearly celebrations of learning. This prepares Browning boys for the advanced curriculum in the school’s later years.

Located on East 62nd Street, the School will be moving its high school to a purpose-built facility on East 64th Street, creating an expanded K-8 experience for younger learners.

Kelly West, Director of Admissions, says visiting families are sometimes surprised by all that boys’ schools offer. “The great thing about a boys’ school is that there’s not a single story about how to be a boy,” she says. “We have an expansive view of what masculinity means, and we treat boys as individuals, with their own unique strengths and challenges. You won’t hear ‘all boys are like this’ at the Browning School. It’s not the absence of girls—but rather the celebration of boyhood—that sets Browning apart from other schools.”
