We just got word that Humble Fish, a Hawaiin poke bowl restaurant, will be opening at 426 Amsterdam Avenue, between 80th and 81st Street (thanks to our reliable tipster, ‘Upper West Sider’). Our tipster was informed by a real estate agent entering the storefront. The last occupant of this space was Big Bang Burger, which closed at the end of 2018.
Humble Fish currently has a location at 35 Lispenard Street (near Canal Street).
Their website stresses that they’ll never serve fish treated with carbon monoxide, which is apparently a common artificial process which makes fish appear fresh (and is used by many restaurants). Not sure if you knew about that. I didn’t.
Everything at Humble Fish is hand-made and their chefs have worked at Michelin star restaurants.
And, most of their menu is gluten and dairy-free.
On to the menu! Fish selections include ahi tuna, salmon and shrimp. Two stand-out bowls are their “Fired-Up! Pineapple Shrimp” and “Coconut Ceviche”.
Small plates include fish tacos, ahi bbq buns (tuna with Hawaiian barbecue sauce), and “Poke-Piled Nachos” (with ahi tuna, pico de gallo and wasabi garlic aioli).
The “Humble Pie” dessert sounds great. The menu description: “layers of Belgian chocolate, haupia, coconut whipped cream, toasted coconut, chocolate flakes”.
They’ve got a small drink list with Montauk cans and Narragansett on draft, red and white wine, and hard kombucha.
Reviews for their downtown location are mostly positive, so let’s hope this will be a positive addition to the neighborhood.
Another new poke place, Mighty Bowl, will also be joining the UWS soon.Join the UWS newsletter for more restaurant updates!
