A facade renovation is underway at the historic Hungarian Pastry Shop, located at 1030 Amsterdam Avenue between 110th and 111th streets. The long-running shop announced the renovation last week, saying they’d be closed from August 5 to August 18.

“The renovation plans are respectful to the shop’s heritage,” wrote New York YIMBY in December. “The proposal suggests replacing the old vinyl, which was installed in 1978, with a more durable tile façade. Notably, it retains the original motif of two individuals kissing, but refreshes it with a modern perspective.”

According to the proposal presented to the Landmarks Preservation Committee, other conditions which call for the upgrades include a lack of fresh air through the upper vent; a “rusty & obsolete” roll-up gate; an entrance door that’s too small to meet ADA requirements; unpleasant exterior lighting; and exterior paintings which are chipping away.

“The existing storefront dates back to 1978, and it has not been renovated since,” the presentation states. “The existing storefront is in no way energy efficient, leaking cold air in summer and hot air in winter. Its deterioration also makes it difficult to seal against the incursion of vermin from the street.”

Here are some images of existing conditions which the bakery aims to improve in just over a week.
