West Village Italian restaurant Canto is set to open a sister location 2014 Broadway at 69th Street this June, next door to Zizi Wine Bar (thanks to Instagram user @gambrelle_ for the tip). The vacant space was previously home to Sapphire Indian Cuisine.

Canto UWS describes themselves on social media as “all about delicious Italian eats & curated cocktails.” If the new menu resembles that of the original West Village location, Upper West Siders can expect classic small plates, salads, pasta dishes, charcuterie, a variety of traditional desserts such as tiramisu, and a plethora of wine and cocktail options. According to Canto’s website, they also offer private events and catering services.
For a long time, the only signs of life in the space were the black window signs with Canto’s logo and a promising “Coming Spring 2024” message. Recently, though, the UWS restaurant has been a hive of activity during the day, with workers coming in and out as they prepare the interior for the forthcoming opening. The space has been repainted white with a black awning, and a May 20 Instagram announcement confirmed the opening would be happening in June. A later post on May 27 gave a sneak peek of the interior under construction, with high arched ceilings and a tiled bar.
Canto’s press team tells ILTUWS an official opening date will be announced soon. We’ll update this post once we have more info.

Ps we neeed more shopping on upper west side so glad Chanel beauty opened but we need more luxury we need to rival the upper east side! We can’t let Jeffrey Epstein and rudy Gillian win!!! We neeed more prestige on the upper west side! You are always #2 to the upper east!!!! Yall need more luxury and Russians!!!! We neeed to be like a royal borough in London!!! Monnnayyyy it’s 11:31am and I don’t work.
another pricey Italian eatery on the upper west side!
How about French Greek, or something else different.
I don’t pay $25 and up for restaurant pastas. Waste of my money. I can make great Italian meals at home for far less with ingredients I buy at Fairway, etc.
Looking forward to Canto opening. Menu and restaurant decor look great. To those complaining about the prices they have no idea how expensive it is to run a restaurant in NYC. Between Rents, Con Ed, Payroll and ever increasing real estate taxes have made running a restaurant a very dicey proposition. NYC fees, fines, permits and taxes make life miserable for restaurant owners so I am glad to see people opening nice restaurants on UWS. Let the complainers eat at Grays Papaya. Welcome to the neighborhood Canto.
How dare the poors complain with such plentiful hot dogs!
I am a fan of the location on Perry St. and know the owner. I am pretty sure they will make that space interesting and make it a nice neighborhood destination. I am looking forward to their opening soon.
