If pursuing a bilingual education (English and French) for your little one is of interest, you’re in for a treat. With three existing locations on the Upper West Side (and one in Westchester), La Maternelle is expanding with a new space–its largest yet–at 406 West 55th Street (previously home to Bright Horizons). Renovations are underway, but here’s a sneak peek: Expect 10 classrooms filled with natural light, windows everywhere and a private playground. Yes, it’s your youngster’s utopia mere moments from midtown!
Though doors aren’t officially open, La Maternelle is expected to be complete in June and spots are already filling up for the upcoming semester. In terms of programming, offerings are available for children aged 3 months to 5 years. There’s plenty of flexibility — for infants to two-year-olds, full-time care is available. Meanwhile, for preschool-aged kids, there are part-time options suitable for any schedule. Here’s a major bonus — La Maternelle offers a year-round program, taking the guesswork out of the age-old question: “What are we supposed to do with the kids once summer rolls around?” Additionally, hours range from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., making this the ultimate choice for the professional parent.
La Maternelle has set out to effortlessly blend an introduction to the French language and culture with socialization. But above all, their main priority is to foster a nurturing, safe and reliable environment for both children and working parents (no French fluency necessary; they have a class list filled with people from every walk of life!). There are plenty of enrichment programs on the docket as well; think soccer, basketball, music and more (get all of the info here).
Ecstatic parents are thrilled with La Maternelle’s programs.
“I’ve had nothing but great experiences at La Maternelle with my children,” an Upper West Side mother explained. “It’s a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment. The teachers are truly exceptional—super invested in the kids and loving them as if they were their own. It’s heartwarming to see how they form genuine connections with each child, providing individualized attention and support that fosters both emotional and intellectual growth. I especially love their French dual language program, which introduces my children to a second language in such a fun and engaging way.”
“And don’t even get me started on potty training! My 4-year-old would still be in diapers if not for her amazing teachers. Their patience and encouragement made all the difference. The commitment to early childhood development and various activities keeps my children engaged and happy. I trust them infinitely! If you’re searching for a place where your little ones can thrive, La Maternelle is definitely worth checking out,” another confirmed.
