On Friday, September 13, two women–ages 77 and 81–were assaulted in separate incidents and by different suspects on the Upper West Side.
On September 19, 37-year-old Brooklyn resident Anthony Melendez was arrested for his assault against a 77-year-old woman at 27 West 72nd Street. At the time of the initial report, police said Melendez had punched the woman in the eye before fleeing by foot, and that she sustained minor injuries but was not hospitalized.
Now, police say another 37-year-old man–Hansel Esparragoza, who resides in Staten Island–has been arrested for assaulting an 81-year-old woman who was walking her dog at 66th and Amsterdam Avenue near her apartment. Surveillance video obtained by Fox 5 New York showed Esparragoza passing the woman before turning around and sucker punching her in the face.
Esparragoza was the subject of a March 2023 report by SIlive.com titled ‘Mom confronts man who allegedly grabbed, kissed daughter at Staten Island Ferry terminal in viral TikTok video.’ According to the report, Esparragoza is believed to have “grabbed and kissed the hand” of an 11-year-old girl. Here’s a video of the incident. Esparragoza, who is believed to be homeless, was arrested for the incident before being released without bail.
It is time to charge these perpetrators with attempted murder not just assault. Put them away for a very long time.
RELEASED WITHOUT BAIL!! Yes, I’m SHOUTING my disgust! At the very least, he should be commited to a mental institution.
Please correct my misspelling of “committed”. Why can’t we edit our replies?
