Man Tries to Steal Statue from Cathedral of St. John the Divine

At about 8:31 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, police say a man tried to remove a statue from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Ave (at West 112th Street).

When the man noticed a security person within the building, “he dropped the statue and fled location on foot in an unknown direction,” according to NYPD officials.

The NYPD is hoping someone from the public can help them identify and locate the suspect, as they are looking to arrest him on attempted grand larceny charges.

The male suspect is described as 5’10,” 220 pounds, between 45-50 years old and with a light complexion. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants, and black sneakers.
