Marine Layer Opening at 205 Columbus Avenue

Marine Layer will soon open at 205 Columbus Avenue, between 69th and 70th Streets. The clothing retailer is based in California and has locations on Bleecker Street, in Brooklyn and Nolita.

Their casual t-shirts are their signature item, but they also sell button-downs, sweatshirts and jackets, jeans, underwear, socks, hats, belts, sunglasses, dresses, skirts and blazers.

Their t-shirts come with custom graphics and designs, with pricing (per their website) ranging from about $25 to $65. You’ll find lots of retro designs and aggressive Cali vibes on their shelves.

Marine Layer also offers clothing for kids 1-5, and while I’m not sure if it’s a unique branding effort or just an attempt for the owners to make some extra cash through their website, Marine Layer markets their own Airbnb’s which are designed like their stores (they also come with shopping discounts for guests). They have these in Chicago and New Orleans, and are building one in Portland (all with nearby Marine Layer stores).

Marine Layer is also big on sustainability, with a line of recycled t-shirts they call their “Re-Spun” line; you can donate an old t-shirt for them to redesign and you’ll get a $5 credit. Not a huge financial incentive, but they say they’ve collected 100,000 shirts.

Also opening (a few doors down) is Madewell at 211 Columbus Avenue. And opening across the street is Kee’s Chocolates at 228 Columbus Avenue. This already posh area is getting quite a few upgrades.
