Marine Layer, which first opened on the Upper West Side in 2019 at 205 Columbus Ave. (between 69th and 70th streets), has moved up the street to 420 Columbus Ave. (just north of 80th St.). The new location opened Friday in the space that formerly housed Rituals until it closed in May 2022.

A store manager told us that the brand had been eyeing a bigger space on the UWS and that 205 Columbus was a sublease from Kate Spade, which originally opened there in 2013. Le Labo, an NYC-based perfume company owned by Estee Lauder, is reportedly next in line to open at 205 Columbus.

Based in California, Marine Layer was founded in 2009 by Mike Natenshon with the goal of creating a t-shirt with the soft, broken-in feel of your old favorite you’ve worn for years. Fifteen years later, the company has more than 40 nationwide locations and counts sweaters, sweatshirts, button-downs, outerwear, and women’s styles like dresses, pants, jackets, t-shirts and more among its offerings. The influence of California is evident throughout the coastal casual designs.

“We want to make clothes that make you feel good when you put them on,” Natenshon told Forbes in 2018. “There’s a laid-back, coastal aesthetic to our pieces and we draw a lot of inspiration from retro designs.”

The new UWS location is offering 20% off “retired styles” through the weekend.

After the closing of Andy’s Deli, the northwest corner of W. 80th St. and Columbus has been mostly vacant as of late. But with Marine Layer open and % Arabica scheduled to open right next door in June – not to mention Warby Parker active for more than a year at 424 Columbus Ave – the corner across from Theodore Roosevelt Park and the American Museum of Natural History is slowly coming back to life.
