Held in conjunction with Fleet Week, the event is set to take place on Monday, May 27 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. According to Neil M. Berson, Vice-President and Director of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Association, “there will be a large presence of US Navy personnel, including a flag officer of the fleet and many dignitaries, including national and local political leaders and others, Veterans and Community groups, the Marine Corps Band, and news media.”
Those who attend – last year’s crowd exceeded 2,500 people – can expect a number of speeches, a wreath laying ceremony accompanied by bagpipes, and a fighter jet flyover.
“The ceremony is beautiful and dignified befitting this day of remembrance and tribute to the men and women of our armed forces who gave their last measure of devotion to defend and protect our Nation and the democratic principles on which it was founded,” said Berson. In January 2023, ILTUWS reported that the mayor’s office had allocated $62.4 million to restore the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. According to NYC Parks’ capital project tracker, the design phase is 30% complete – and the project is expected to be completed by June 2025.
“The schematic design for this project has been approved internally at Parks and is now going through review by the community board and external regulatory agencies for comment and approval,” reads the latest project update.
