A lucky Upper West Side shopper has defied the odds, winning second prize in Tuesday’s Mega Millions lottery and taking home a cool $1 million. The winning ticket was sold at the aptly named Lucky Corner, a convenience store located at 200 West 96th Street, where you can buy anything from newspapers to breakfast sandwiches to, apparently, million dollar lottery tickets.

This isn’t the first time that the Upper West Side, or even Lucky Corner, has played host to a lottery windfall. The store sold a Powerball ticket worth $50,000 back in August 2024. In July 2023, the neighborhood saw another second place million dollar ticket, this time sold at Millennium Smoke and News at 2345 Broadway (between 85th and 86th streets). And in November 2021, a whopping three winning lottery tickets were sold at Lucky Choice Convenience at 118 West 72nd Street. That netted each winner a whopping $2.76 million before taxes. That’s the full $8.3 million jackpot, split three ways.

So just how lucky is this winner? The winning numbers for the Mega Millions game are drawn from a field of one to 70, with the Mega Ball drawn from a separate range of one to 25. That makes the odds of winning second place 1 in 12,607,306. That’s not as lucky as a first prize winner, who needs to beat odds of 1 in 302,575,350, but it’s still a lot luckier than Lucky Corner. Unfortunately for them, while stores that sell the winning lottery ticket get a big bonus, a second place sale nets them nothing.

There are no details on the winner’s identity yet, so it’s not clear if it’s an Upper West Sider or simply someone who just felt lucky while passing through. But if you spot any splashy spending sprees in the area in the near future, that might be your clue.

The Mega Millions drawing is televised every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m.
