Nancy Sliwa (formerly Nancy Regula), wife of Republican mayoral candidate and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, is running as a Republican for City Council District 6 on the Upper West Side, Patch reports. She will face off against Democrat Gale Brewer, who was announced the winner of the Democratic primary in June and is expected to be Helen Rosenthal’s replacement.
Sliwa’s name is listed on the New York City Campaign Finance Board as a “non-participant,” which means she has not “chosen to join the Campaign Finance Program by timely certifying.” But as of writing, there’s no campaign website, and press reports about her run are limited. (She was mentioned briefly in an August 15 writeup by silive.com, which notes that she is an attorney by trade).

Nancy, who lives with Curtis and 16 cats in a 320 square foot studio on the Upper West Side, gave Patch a glimpse into her platform, which focuses (at least in part) on issues including animal welfare, homelessness and safety, specifically within the NYC subway system.
Regarding animal welfare, she would focus on “Promoting no kill shelters, organizing outdoor cats into colonies to keep them from being brought to the shelters and euthanized as they keep the number of rodents down.”
Regarding homelessness, Sliwa told Patch that she “[looks] at dropping prices all the time for rentals and [believes] the market forces are working themselves out with supply and demand. There is no reason to consistently be building new units that are economically out of the reach for all but the wealthiest. My candidacy will focus on doing more with less.” Sliwa also called out elected officials, including Helen Rosenthal, for not being transparent or communicating about the relocation of homeless individuals into Upper West Side hotels.
And regarding safety, she states that “Pressure needs to be put on the NYPD to maintain law and order as well as these social outreach organizations such as ThriveNYC getting over a billion dollars to address exactly this issue.”
Nancy currently serves as the “Director of Guardian Angels Animal Protection,” according to her Twitter profile.
We’ve reached out to Sliwa through Instagram and will provide an update if she writes back.
She has as much chance of winning as her husband.
And when they both lose, maybe they will both crawl back into the hole from which they came and stay there. 😉
320 square feet with 16 cats is definitely a hole.
Ian,
You are a kinder person than that statement implies.
I knew them way back when; they were sleazy people back then, and they have not changed. Curtis is a PR whore, pure and simple: he never met a camera or microphone he couldn’t monopolize, or a political wind he could not test with his upraised finger, and use to his advantage. And both of them have some significant skeletons in their closets, particularly him.
Yes, I’m generally a nice guy. But I have little patience or kindness for phonies.
🙁
Your comment fits many current politicians of all stripes. I will resist naming names. Kindness works. You will not convince people with invective.
I’m not trying to “convince” anyone of anything. I simply state what I know. People are free to agree or disagree with my intent.
You were successful then.
And I’m stating what I know personally – how much Helen Rosenthal, Gale Brewer, & Linda Rosenthal have all failed the UWS. When I walk pass someone who is coming up to me and I just want to walk by and they call me “b*tch” or worse just for walking by minding my own business, I can personally know how much the 3 current officials have failed us the last 2 years. They have their own agendas and listening to people who work 50-60 hours per week to keep surviving is not on their agenda. The ordinary people don’t bring them enough attention. So Sliwa is no worse than the 3 PHONIES currently in office.
I have lived on the UWS for over 50 years. You are ABSOLUTELY WRONG about them. Gale is possibly the most effective elected official we have had in NYC. Linda has been incredibly effective in all regards. Helen had her issues, but on balance was helpful to her constituents – which is what people are elected for. Nice try.
Don’t care what they DID back when. The last 2 years they have failed their every day hard working constituents. Only PR stunts and photo ops with “Da Homeless Hero” and “Open Hearts” get their attention. Not the every day hard working citizens who ask for help to feel safe and not be taken advantage of while we pay the highest taxes to live in a small apartment that we can afford because we pay for it ourselves – and it’s not the rent controlled or stabilized for the last 40 years apartments like most of the 3 phonies’ voters. Get off your pedestal – you don’t own the UWS and its thoughts.
Right on!!
Interesting. So you are the ONLY “real” “hard-working” constituent they have? I, too, am a hard-working constituent, and they have not failed me.
And “what they did back then” affect us NOW – so, yes, it DOES matter.
I hope you like the Mayor we have now, enjoy the invasion of over 150 thousand non-citizens, more crime happening, cops getting beat up and women being rob and your taxes going up to house and feed these free loaders.
“There is no reason to consistently be building new units that are economically out of the reach for all but the wealthiest.”
Sure there is. In the short term–so basically the design-approve-then build process,–construction of such “housing” (often 3rd or 4th “homes”) for just the .1% rewards developers and the finance that’s backed them. Also those who can afford to purchase, or get a mortgage for, such “ultra” housing, can oft profit significantly in just 5 years.
Interesting that Ms Sliwa is in fact advocating a subset of New Deal policies–one that many advertisers at iLovetheUWS wouldn’t like.
Cats belong indoors not on the streets being hit by cars and dying of disease. We also don’t need food left out for cat “colonies” that ends up attracting rats, raccoons, skunks, etc.
The radical democrats have done such a horrible job of running this city and state that unless a conservative dem or liberal rep get elected, we’ll be in for many more crime ridden, filthy, unproductive and dangerous years
No mayor has done a bang-up job of running the largest, most difficult city in the world. Each one has done good and bad things, Democrat and Republican alike. Trying to score point by blaming the Democrats is weak, and historically inaccurate.
Nobody has harmed us more than diblasio. Cuomo’s handling of the nursing homes was horrific. His lax attitude towards crime is reprehensible. We we’re screwed
I will agree that DeBlasio has been the worst mayor in my lifetime. But that’s a pretty low bar, and does not negate the faults, bad policies and bad management of his predecessors. Nothing happens in a vacuum. (Though I would like to know how you define “harmed.”)
As for Cuomo, you are conflating two things. His handling of the nursing homes themselves was perfectly fine. He only mishandled “the numbers,” causing unnecessary grief for some people.
I feel that diblasio allowed the quality of life to deteriorate in every way. You have to admit that it was far safer, cleaner and prosperous before he took over for 8 years. I don’t mind his quirks and laziness , but I mind his negligence. As for Cuomo , he made a disastrous move that wound up killing the elderly. He was also very easy on violent criminals. People are getting away with very dangerous crimes. We could be a victim of random acts of violence. It should scare everybody
I find it sad that right-wingers tend to engage in fear-mongering as an expression of their political differences with Democrats.
I find it sad that the radical left seems immune to the havoc that they have caused. There is no excuse for escaping reality
Your use of the phrase “radical left” is more revealing than you may realize.
Thanks for the compliment
