The Jewish Theological Seminary originally owned the site. They sold the building in order to finance capital improvements and new buildings in Morningside Heights, according to an article first published by NY Daily News. It was originally a five-story dorm called Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall, which was sold together with the six-story Goldsmith Hall at 3060 Broadway.
