New Omakase Spot to Open on W. 70s Side Street

Sushi fans, keep your eyes peeled – a new omakase spot is headed for the neighborhood.

The owners of the restaurant have rented a space at 163 West 71st Street, @TradedNY recently revealed, while adding that the 1,500 square foot spot was leased at $120 per square foot for a grand total of $180,000 per year.

ILTUWS spoke to the broker, Joey Kafif of Safdie Realty Group, who handled the transaction. Kafif confirmed that the spot had been leased but he couldn’t confirm the actual name of the restaurant for confidentiality reasons. We were unable to reach the owner of the building.

For those Upper West Siders not in the know, omakase is a Japanese phrase meaning “I leave it up to you.” It refers to the practice of going to a Japanese restaurant and leaving it up to the chef to pick your meal for you instead of ordering for yourself. Although, it’s worth noting that the menu usually tells you how many pieces of sushi and sashimi you’ll be getting, if not what kind.

The forthcoming restaurant will be joining a number of other Japanese restaurants in the area including Kumo, Tenzan, Bondi, Kissaki and Omakase Shihou.

The space was previously occupied by 71 Dental Spa. We’ll update this post when we learn more.
