New Restaurants to Replace Calle Ocho, Nanoosh

Community Board 7 held its Street Life Committee meeting on Wednesday, and restaurant representatives presented plans for their upcoming projects in order to further their liquor license applications.

A restaurant called Zizi is opening at 2012 Broadway between 68th and 69th streets in the space formerly occupied by Nanoosh, which in July 2020 closed all of its locations.

This will be a full-service Mediterranean restaurant with six tables and 28 seats and a 25-seat bar food counter. Hours of operation would be 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. A representative for the restaurant told the board they’d like to try out these hours to see if there’s a decent amount of late-night business. But if there isn’t, they’ll close earlier. There will be background music only.

Owner Sharon Hoota operates three Hummus Kitchens in NYC. They are located at 768 Ninth Avenue, 1613 Second Avenue and 444 Third Avenue.

There’s also a Zizi located at 182 Eighth Avenue. It wasn’t immediately clear if the forthcoming UWS eatery will be the same. We’ve reached out for more details and will update when we know more.

The people behind Modern Bread and Bagel and Thyme & Tonic have leased the former Calle Ocho space at 2756 Broadway at West 106th Street. The restaurant will be kosher, serving meats as well as gluten-free and vegan options. We’re told to expect upscale vibes, and an extensive renovation will be taking place. The owners are also planning on utilizing the backyard space in some capacity.
