In March, Stand Up NY relocated from the Upper West Side to Times Square after a 38-year run and a final performance featuring comedian and Upper West Sider Judy Gold.
While an official date has not been confirmed, we’ve now gotten word that its replacement, New York Comedy Club, plans to take over the space at 236 West 78th Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam) this summer.

Co-owner Emilio Savone tells us it should be open by August 1 but they’re targeting mid-July. “This will play in well with our anniversary,” Savone says, explaining that he and partner E Scott Lindner took over New York Comedy Club’s Gramercy and East Village locations on July 31, 2014 and August 14, 2018, respectively.
They’ve also got a spot in Stamford, CT, making their forthcoming venue number four.
Savone described each location as unique, and plans to make the Upper West Side comedy club a bit more polished than their downtown outlets. For example, they’ll be serving drinks in glassware as opposed to plastic cups.

They’ll also have open mic nights, as Stand Up NY did, and he indicated that a good number of big name comics will be doing hour-long, headliner sets (in addition to ‘showcase’ sets, in which a number of comedians try out new material for a shorter period of time).
Savone told us they basically need more space for their comedians and customers, hence the northward expansion.

They’re in the process of rebranding the space, but no structural changes are being made (e.g. the bar will still be in the front).
