Outdoor Fun: Live Music & Urban Landscaping

man leaving house

A graphic of a man leaving his house. I couldn’t find a graphic of someone leaving their apartment.

Here are a few upcoming events that might be worth leaving the apartment for.

On Sunday, September 29 from 11 a.m. – noon, the West 80s Neighborhood Association will present its Daffodil Bulb Giveaway (one of its annual ‘Love Your Street Tree Day’ events). The event will take place on the northeast corner of 84th and Amsterdam Avenue (near the garden). “Come collect your daffodil bulbs and then plant them this fall in your neighborhood street tree beds and NYC community gardens!” a flyer for the event reads. The West 80s Neighborhood Association will also be giving out free ‘Curb Your Dog’ signs, so as to discourage dogs from pooping in your favorite tree bed. Please bring a bag to collect your bulbs. Both bulbs and signs are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Saturday, October 3 at 3 p.m., the 87th Street Community Garden will be hosting a live jazz concert with Ron McClure & Friends (here’s the flyer). McClure is a jazz bassist. Here’s a video of his band performing in the garden earlier this year.

Three Sunday concerts are taking place at the 116th Street Overlook in Riverside Park next month: A bluegrass band on October 6, a blues band on October 13, and a jazz quartet on October 20. Each concert begins at 2 p.m. More info here.

Parks are always great for mental health days. October 10 is actually the official Global Mental Health Day, and The Yellow Tulip Project (YTP)–whose core mission is to “smash stigma associated with mental illness”–will be posted up in Central Park to brighten a few days. From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., they’ll be at Cherry Hill (mid-park at 72nd Street) handing out free tulip bulbs and sharing some information about their programs. “Yellow tulips are a symbol of hope so we will be opening up the conversation about what it means to have hope in the context of mental illness and how communities can come together to plant ‘hope gardens,’ says YTP intern Maddie Claman.

More daffodil and tree bed fun (h/t Gale Brewer’s newsletter): On Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the West 72nd Street Block Association will hold its annual Daffodil Planting/Tree Bed Care Community Volunteer Day in partnership with Broadway Mall Association. Make sure to bring gardening gloves and any gardening equipment you have. Volunteers will will clean tree beds and plant daffodil bulbs which will then sprout next spring. Let them know you’re coming by emailing w72streetblockassociation@gmail.com.
