A new restaurant called Pekarna will be opening at 592 Amsterdam Avenue, at West 89th Street. According to Community Board 7 notes, it will have a backyard.
Information about Pekarna is limited, but according to this website, “Pekarna” means “bakery” in Serbo-Croatian. So it might be safe to expect Serbian and Croation foods.
Pekarna’s website contains a pretty vague ‘mission statement’:
A project has started to build a new restaurant, bar and function rooms in the upper west side of New York City that will offer exceptional experiences as a venue to enjoy great times, dinners and special events. The design of the spaces, team and operations will focus on the quality of service as a basic mission and the expectation to reach high levels of recognition due to outstanding hospitality performance will be our vision.
We reached out to Pekarna for details but haven’t yet gotten a response. They haven’t yet posted anything on their Facebook page, outside of a logo, but feel free to follow or like it for updates.
Pekarna will be located two doors down from the new bar by Amsterdam Ale House, which is also supposed to have an outdoor space.
Glick Property Group purchased 588, 590, 592, and 594 Amsterdam Avenue in 2013 for for $33 million. The developer’s plan was to renovate the buildings to attract higher-paying, more upscale tenants. Previous occupants at these spaces included Caridad, Papa John’s, Subway, as well as a dollar store and One Stop Laundromat.
We don’t know exactly when Pekarna is expected to open, but we’ll stay on top of them.
In the meantime, these Upper West Side restaurants are expected to open in September:
- Daily Provisions at 375 Amsterdam Avenue (78th Street)
- Pho Shop at 141 West 72nd Street (between Amsterdam and Columbus)
- Barachou at 449 Amsterdam (between 81st and 82nd). They might actually open during August.
