A group of Upper West Siders are petitioning a real estate development backed by Michael Dell, primarily because they say it’s going to be ugly, Crain’s first reported.
The building will be located at 2505 Broadway, between 93rd and 94th Streets.
In September 2018, the site was purchased for $50 million by MSD Partners, the private investment firm which exclusively manages Michael Dell’s money.
The building is being developed by Adam America, and opponents are particularly displeased with the planned cantilever design, with part of the structure jutting out horizontally. ODA Architecture is listed as the architect of record.
Renderings haven’t been made public yet, but opponents are determined to stop construction. The group calls themselves the Cantilever Opposition Group, and have reportedly collected about 350 signatures from others opposed to the project.
“It’s just going to be a big, ugly cantilever,” said Wayne Kabak, the group’s spokesman.
Says opponent Gail Ettinger, “We object to the building not only because it will be ugly but also because the design is so badly out of character and spirit with the surrounding structures. The proposed design is offensive.”
Once complete, the mixed-use condominium will stand 19 stories tall, with 44 apartments, a 5,000 square foot ground floor commercial space, and have a total footprint of 75,000 square feet.
Building amenities will include a golf simulator room, a dog wash and a library lounge.
Here is a link to the permit, which was approved in May 2019. Construction is expected to be complete by July 2021, according to signs at the building.
It’s not about it being ‘ugly’, it’s about the illegal CANTILEVER that was approved despite violating zoning and structural codes of the lot. The Resident group is just trying to make sure the big dev money behind the project is held to legal standards. Unfair to frame the opposition in this article as merely about taste…
