Shake Shack Opens Columbus Circle Location

Shake Shack opened its newest location this past Thursday at The Shops at Columbus Circle. The new outpost for Danny Meyer’s fast casual chain featuring burgers, chicken sandwiches, shakes and more is Shake Shack’s third Upper West Side restaurant, joining nearby locations at 366 Columbus Avenue (opposite the American Museum of Natural History at West 77th Street) and 2957 Broadway (at West 116th Street) in Morningside Heights.

Shake Shack started as a hot dog stand in Madison Square Park in 2001 that operated out of the kitchen at nearby Eleven Madison Park, Meyer’s three-Michelin-star marquee establishment (which he later sold to Chef Daniel Humm and Will Guidara ). In 2004, Meyer won a proposal to operate Shake Shack out of the kiosk in Madison Square Park, which became the brand’s first actual storefront. Twenty years later, Shake Shack has close to 500 locations internationally, 38 of which are in New York City.

According to a press release announcing the opening, Shake Shack isn’t the only restaurant at The Shops at Columbus Circle celebrating its 20th anniversary. Other establishments like Momofuku Noodle Bar and the Michelin-starred Per Se and Masa turn 20 this year as well.

Shake Shack’s menu is ever-expanding and currently offers a variety of takes on its classic burger including the Avocado Bacon, SmokeShack (bacon, chopped cherry peppers, ShackSauce), Black Truffle (gruyere and black truffle sauce), Black Truffle ‘Shroom (fried portobello with muenster and cheddar cheese), among others. While the burgers steal the show, the signature chicken sandwiches and crinkle cut fries (which now include a Black Truffle Parmesan option) can’t be overlooked. Newer shake flavors include Chocolate Salted Caramel, Strawberry Frosted Donut, and Peaches and Cream.

The Columbus Circle location celebrated its opening by donating $1 for every sandwich sold to City Harvest, which brings food that would otherwise go to waste to the homeless and others who need it most.

The location is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and is on the third floor of The Shops at Columbus Circle.
