At roughly 3:45pm on Thursday, October 28, a man in his 70s was shot, the bullet grazing his leg by the McDonald’s by Broadway and West 71st Street, an NYPD spokesman told ILTUWS.
The shooter is still at large. Helicopters and sirens have been seen and heard in the area looking for the gunman. The victim was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital and is in stable condition.
The video below was taken by a nearby resident after the shooting.
At Thursday evening’s 20th Precinct Community Council meeting, Captain Zuber said the incident was set off by a dispute between two small groups of “what appeared to be teenagers, maybe young 20s.” Zuber says at least one person had a gun, and the one bullet which was fired struck the innocent bystander. Luckily he’s already been treated and released.

We’ll provide an update as more details become available.
It’s hard to find words for this tragedy. Let’s hope we get a better mayor who can clean up this town.
I’ve lived around the corner since the 1990 and this is definitely part of the legacy that belongs to this totally incompetent mayor and the new and improved useless NYPD under his watch. During the terms with Bloomberg, this individual would’ve been apprehended before he could ever get off the scene. These acts are more brazen because they know no one’s on duty. Read the tipping point
A graze wound is a tragedy? That’s a lot of drama you got going on there.
It’s a traumatic thing to get shot. Maybe a gunshot wouldn’t bother you, but some of us would have been horrified. The guy could have gotten killed. Is dying a traged?
Nobody came close to dying.
“No one came close to dying”????? You are a sick and deranged individual to look away from ANY SHOOTING.
If you take away the place where trouble congregates (i.e. McDonald’s), those who are troublesome will not come (you don’t see them at Pinkberry or Starbuck’s). While DeBlasio is a disaster, for sure, this square has been a problem since before he was mayor.
St Luke’s? It hasn’t been that for a very long time.
But it’ll stay St. Luke’s (and Roosevelt) for me. My totally lame, ineffectual stand against the monster Mt. Sinai has become.
Add not one but TWO cannabis-oriented apothecaries on the same block as McDonald’s and you have a recipe for (more) disaster, medicinal-use and purchase notwithstanding. McDonald’s used to have uniformed security presence in the store (now non–existent). Couple that with around the afternoon dismissal time when nearby high schools let out, then entire area around the 72nd Street subway station on Broadway used to have a noticeable NYPD presence to handle the large groups of students that regularly block pedestrian and commercial movement as they gather before heading home. For the past two years? Nothing, nada, zip. All blamed on Covid-19 pandemic’s redirecting resources elsewhere; de Blasio’s milquetoast (mis)handling of urban crime and concomitant neighborhood policing cutbacks. Sadly, there will be more of the same and everyone will act surprised and shocked each and every time. “How could this happen?” With the abundance of illegal firearms flooding the city, originating from Southern states with no required background checks, and now, 3-D copiers around to manufacture more handguns, it’s the new normal.
Absolutely right. That is a major problem and I only hope that it gets resolved with a new mayor. We have to be very careful about who we vote for. The politicos we have, have failed us brutally
Resolved with the new mayor? Don’t hold your breath. Aside from politicians who talk a good talk for the photo ops but actually do NOTHING about from crime [that doesn’t affect them at all], the problem is with the voters – the voters keep voting for these corrupt politicians who release recidivist criminals, do not prosecute, and let them get away with their crimes. The criminal community knows this – hence, even more brazen crimes are and will be committed.
Sad, I’d wager a majority of upper west siders voted for the incompetent Mayor Di-idiot they are getting what they asked for good and hard. I hope they liked the homeless shelter at the Lucerne too
Absolute fools. It’s okay to get duped the first time, but shame on them for the second
You are absolutely correct. Except that I did NOT vote for these low-life corrupt DO-NOTHING politicians. Actually, I should say DO-NOTHING. They do DO something – namely, line their pockets, pander for more votes from the stupid, and basically do everything they can (ethical and unethical) to keep their power, influence, and money. I literally have spoken with my neighbors about this very subject. ALL THEY DO IS DEFLECT, bring up Trump, demonize Republicans, make excuses, and look away. It is truly astonishing the level of denial and evil in the world (and on the Upper West Side).
Officer Henao is the worst. This is the best the 20 Precinct has to offer?
Having lived on the Upper West Side for many years, it has changed and not for the better. I know one cannot “go home again”, and that things change….progress they call it. But it changed when the city was turned over to the big real estate cabal….giving them carte blanche to tear downs and renovate…and build tall, and half empty monoliths few can afford. When I first moved here, there was plenty of housing to be found, though I had to work several jobs ….when I started, teachers were paid $5300 a year….true! Schools were better. Small business abounded….everything you needed could be found…shoe makers, hardward stores, neighborhood pharmacies , clothing stores, shoe stores. That was the key to life on the UWS. Now, try to find an apartment for a family…..there are mostly large chains and, of course the pandemic made it worse. Empty stores abound on Broadway, Amsterdam, and Columbus Avenues. On the East Side, as well. Crime is down, they say. Not only the neighborhoods changed, but the way the city is run has changed. One poor mayor after another…one poorly run legislature making rules that hurt the city….no bail, easy release, no jail time, etc. The jail situation has turned into chaos….people languish inside for months and years before trials…..I don’t have the answers…I don’t make the laws, but why is anyone surprise at what has happened to many of the biggest cities in the country. Detroit, Chicago, and Philadelphia…..and NY, too. Is Eric Adams the answer….I don’t think so. Will things improve, I don’t think so. Just my opinion!
NYC has changed profoundly. It is worse than it’s been in decades. With specific regard to this location – where there are TWO (2) pot stores on the same block 150 feet apart – this is do to the greedy building sponsor who rented those spaces to TWO pot stores because the greed head lost the previous businesses from the pandemic (there was a Paris Baguette and a falafel place). Disgusting. HE should be in prison for bringing to POT STORES on the same block in a very residential neighborhood.
