A new Starbucks is opening at 2360 Broadway on the northeast corner of 86th and Broadway, Commercial Observer reports. The 2,061 square foot retail space is part of The Belnord, a residential condo with an address of 225 West 86th Street.
It’s currently unclear when the new location will open.

This commercial space was last occupied by a Banana Republic, which closed around 2012 before moving across the street to 2373 Broadway where a Gap store had previously stood. (Gap Inc. (GPS) owns both The Gap and Banana Republic.) Both of these corners are currently devoid of activity.

From the listing page for 2360 Broadway, it appears that the new Starbucks will only be occupying part of the former Banana Republic Space, as the total available space is over 4,500 square feet (and the new Starbucks will only be a smidge over 2,000). So, expect something new to open next to the coffee chain’s new digs, at some point in the near or extremely distant future.
Here’s the listing page for 2373 Broadway, which also includes the former Gristedes which stood west of Broadway.
There are currently a lot of Starbucks locations on the Upper West Side.
I know there’s much better coffee in the area.
Better pastries too, even though Zabar’s destroyed it’s café’s pastries.
Crazy because there’s a Starbucks on Broadway between 87/88 already. One block north of that.
I’m guessing that one will close when this one opens.
There’s literally one a block away. This is really silly.
A few years ago they closed one that was located across the street, on Broadway. I believe it was the first Starbucks opened in Manhattan, or at least that was mentioned in the news coverage.
As others have noted, the opening of this location almost certainly means the closing of the 87th Street location – one of the most charming and well-run locations, which actually still has a bathroom. Starbucks has been “upgrading” their locations on the UWS, including repairing A/C units and the like. But another “upgrade” is the removal of public restrooms, which almost every Starbucks used to have, but fewer and fewer do. I am certain this is deliberate, and a reverse of a pervious policy that made all Starbucks bathrooms fully “public.” (NYC law says that any food or drink establishment with more than 22 seats must have a bathroom. Starbucks has also been decreasing the number of seats so that they are no longer required to have bathrooms.)
This location may also cause the closing of the just-renovated and reopened location in 81st and Broadway – my “home” location (which also lost its bathroom by decreasing the number of seats). But given how many UWS locations have been closed in the past two or three years, the opening of this new location makes sense, and is a truly “hot spot,” given access to transportation.
I welcome Starbucks to 86th Street. But please, put in a bathroom. Thanks.
Great, said nobody.
just like the neighborhood needs another Starbucks or another bank or drugstore
Actually, I don’t know how closely you’ve been paying attention, but (i) Starbucks has closed at least three locations north of 86th Steet, so that area is actually underserved (and with the new one opening, it is sure bet that the one on 87th will close), (ii) we have actually seen quite a few closing of both banks and DuaneReade/large convenience stores.
I think what we REALLY don’t need any more of are nail salons and artisan coffee shops, which have been spreading like kudzu on the UWS.
