UPDATE: the Starbucks will still be closing.
It was recently announced that the Starbucks on 76th and Columbus will be closing by the end of the month. While it’s usually the floundering small business owner who receives mass public support when he or she runs into trouble, a group of Upper West Siders have decided to fight to keep their corporate coffee haven open.

So, in what seems like the last episode of The Twilight Zone, a petition against their closure has been posted on change.org.
In reference to this Starbucks location, here are a few snippets from the petition, which currently has 88 signatures:
- (the store) “has added enormous value to our community over the years.”
- (the store) “has actually embodied the human and social ideals the brand presumes to espouse.”
And I’m not sure who “we” is, but here’s the strongest statement:
- “We trudge the extra blocks through snowstorms and heatwaves not because the Starbucks 76th Street coffee is any better than the Starbucks 73rd or Starbucks 75th Street coffee but because this store has consistently (and never more so than currently) employed a staff that is diverse and warm and welcoming and make us feel like we’ve found a second home.”
Here’s the full petition.
