This just in: Summer’s on the horizon, and it’s time to iron out plans for the whole family. While warm-weather activities for children veer on the more casual side compared to the traditional school year, you’re likely eager to keep the momentum going once June rolls around. The Early Childhood Center (ECC) at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue has the ultimate answer—a Jewish summer camp for ages 18 months* through 4 years.
Conveniently located at 30 West 68th Street (between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue), the ECC has offered stellar year-round programming since 1949 (more on that later), and it particularly shines in the summertime. After all, it’s staffed by experienced teachers who are far beyond your run-of-the-mill counselors. The program also brings together a mix of friendly new faces, as the camp is not limited to students enrolled in the ECC’s standard school (or synagogue members—though you may be inclined to join once you witness the fun in action!).
Plenty of neighborhood residents attend–including non-Jewish campers–and the reasons why are incredibly clear. For starters, the warm, nurturing environment that’s long been associated with Stephen Wise Free Synagogue is thriving throughout the itinerary, which is designed to foster learning through play.
The ample amenities throughout the school’s facilities (think a lush rooftop, an indoor playground, an art studio, a state-of-the-art water machine and more) are accessible for all participants, and there are plenty of speciality activities like outdoor gardening, plus community-themed days like “Pajama Day” and “Carnival” alongside weekly Shabbat celebrations. See? We told you this is anything but average.
At the ECC, children are viewed as capable and competent individuals. Their curiosity is encouraged, which allows them to flourish in their summer surroundings. The official 2025 camp dates for the drop-off program are June 23 through August 1. Children 2 to 4 can choose between Monday–Friday or Tuesday–Thursday (9 a.m. until 1 p.m.). If your tot isn’t quite there yet, there’s a Juniors Program* option for children 18 months–2 years (though priority is given to families entering the Early Childhood Center program in the fall, so act fast if this is of interest).
The importance of reinforcing a strong Jewish identity is more important than ever, and it’s crucial to start early. This is a key foundation of the ECC’s year-round philosophy, which includes an experiential learning-focused Seeds of Wonder program (ages 12 to 24 months; synagogue membership not required) inspired by the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach. Not only is this an excellent way for the entire family to get involved in the synagogue’s bustling community, but it also introduces children to socialization, culture and Jewish holidays—and it’s the perfect segue to the 2s Program, which highlights the transition from the home environment to school. As we all know, this is a crucial period for growth and advancement, and throughout the program, children learn hands-on through the use of sensory materials and experiences. Think sand, water, clay, paint, cardboard, wire — and even real tools, like hammers and nails — along with scientific equipment (microscopes, light tables) and mechanical engineering challenges.
