Two food and drink establishments on the same block have shuttered for good. “Permanently closed” signage can be found in the windows of both Cafe Metro at 2062 Broadway (corner of 71st Street) and the Joe Coffee at 2058 Broadway (between 70th and 71st streets).

The Joe Coffee at 2058 Broadway just opened in September 2023, replacing Blue Marble Ice Cream. Another location at 72nd and Amsterdam closed in early 2022. Remaining shops can be found at 514 Columbus Ave (85th Street) and 187 Columbus Ave (68th Street).
“Unfortunately, we made the tough decision to close our cafe on 71st & Broadway right after Thanksgiving,” a representative from Joe Coffee told ILTUWS. “We gave it our best effort, but the challenges proved too significant to overcome.”
They want on to explain that “Shortly after opening in September 2023, we were informed that scaffolding would be going up around the building with no clear timeline for its removal. This, combined with restrictions on additional signage while the scaffolding was in place, made it difficult for us to connect with the community and operate successfully.”

While there’s no shortage of coffee shops around the neighborhood, casual Midtown-style lunch break destinations have been disappearing from the immediate area for years now. Gigi Cafe closed in 2018, West Side Cafe closed in 2019, and Cafe 71 closed in 2021.

The same corner was also once home to the storied, greatly missed Bagel Nosh from March 1975 through at least April 1988.
The scaffolding there is terrible. It’s made the block uninviting and hard to navigate. Hopefully they’ll be removed soon and Pizza Collective will stick it out until then. The scaffolding industry must be shut down and these rules must be removed.
Sure let’s go back to more pedestrians getting killed by falling bricks.
Extremely rare occurrence falling bricks. No other city in the world has the same scaffolding problem like NYC. Its a Huge industry and causes the city to look like an eyesore for last 30+ years.
Too many robberies, assaults, and violence in that 2 block radius. But please, open more cannabis shops and pizza joints. 70th and Broadway/Amsterdam is cursed.
Ridiculous comment.
kirby,
Really, when did those occur?
A shame about Cafe Metro. It was one of those places that had the all the fixings salads. They did get a bit pricey though their last year. I miss Gigi Cafe which also had that incredible salad bar.
