Unleashed By Petco, located at 159 Columbus Avenue (between 67th and 68th Streets, will be closing on July 18th, a store manager has confirmed.
The manager wasn’t able to disclose why the store is closing or provide any additional info, but one of our readers was reportedly told by a staff member that the lease is expiring and the landlord has increased the rent to an amount beyond what they can realistically pay.
We’ve reached out to Petco’s press department to see if they could confirm the above with us. They’ve sent us the following statement:

Unleashed By Petco is a smaller-format store which the company describes as “your nearby spot to shop for high-quality, wag-worthy goods and services for dogs and cats.”
For those who want to stock up for their pets before they close, Unleashed By Petco is currently open daily from 10am to 7pm, offering a 10% discount when you order online and use curbside pickup. Here’s the location’s website.

This is a bummer (yet again)
that’s a shame. if it is true regarding the rend hike, i hope the landlord gets used to looking at an empty storefront and not collecting a penny for a good while.
The problem is that they get big tax write offs for empty spaces. If the laws were different, we wouldn’t see so many Empty spaces. Real estate owns NYC, as well as De Blasio and he’s right in their pocket and doing nothing about this.

I went in there today and was so sad to learn of their imminent closure. An employee mentioned about the lease being up. I traveled quite a bit out of my way to shop there, as I really liked the layout, staff, location, and vibe. Yes, a Petco is closer to me (on 92nd and B’way) and Petco owned this place, but I often have pretty bad experiences at the big Petco — long lines, inefficiency, bad layout, run-down vibe. On the plus side, generally nice staff, though — that must be said. Anyway, a big sigh for Unleashed…
