An Upper West Side man was killed on Friday, October 27 after colliding his motorcycle with an SUV on the Henry Hudson Parkway, AM New York was first to report.
Police said 55-year-old Gregory Ahrens, who lived on West 75th Street, was riding north on a Honda motorcycle and ended up rear-ending a Lexus SUV when he tried to switch lanes.
The collision, which took place at about 7:30 p.m. near West 112th Street, caused Ahrens to be ejected from the bike and fly over the median. Police say they discovered him in the center lane of the southbound side.
Ahrens was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside where he was pronounced deceased.
The 61-year-old driver of the SUV remained at the scene.
“after colliding his motorcycle with an SUV”, Well, that says a lot. It suggests grossly reckless driving of the motorcycle.
You can be the at-fault driver without being grossly reckless. Unfortunately even a mistake on a motorcycle has a lot more severe consequences.
Elly,
Unless than SUV were going 60 MPH and suddenly slammed on the the breaks for no reason, so there wasn’t stopped traffic ahead of the SUV, the motorcycle driver’s grossly reckless driving caused his death.
Do you not pay attention to how badly most motorcycles are driven in NYC.
This driver was likely zipping in and out of traffic at more than 40 MPH, and it didn’t occur to him that there’d be an SUV in a traffic lane.
Your post is excuse making for horrid driving.
You’re absolutely right. The motorcyclists, bicycle riders, and electric bike riders in nyc are completely out of control, weaving around cars, driving on the shoulder and on the sidewalk, ignoring red lights, terrifying both drivers and pedestrians–and occasionally killing themselves and others. It’s time for some enforcement.
Frank V:
Don’t know about fullsized motorcycles (I assume this was one) on the Henry Hudson, but the NYPD treats e-bike and gas powered scooter — really small motorcycles, which are oft unlicensed — law breaking as a quality of life issue, despite the fact that these jerks have killed.
Perhaps if one of the scooter or “bike” drivers severely injures a cop things will change. Not holding my breath given the out of touchness from the mayor.
Of course these drivers seem to forget that their machines can be incapacitated if left unattended on the street for more an a minute or 3.
If you rear-end someone, you’re at fault. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow the vehicle in front of you was going, and it doesn’t matter if the guy jammed on his brakes to avoid running over a squirrel. No doubt here whatsoever that the motorcyclist was at fault.
Greg was a very seasoned motorcycle rider. I watched a lot of his Motovlogs on Youtube (GG NYC). I learned a lot from him. RIP Greg. You will be missed.
