Ian Marshall has been a middle and high school tutor for families on the Upper West Side for six years. Originally from Chicago, he graduated from Columbia University with a combined BA in Art History and Visual Art and has worked with dozens of students in the ISEE, SHSAT, and SSAT.
While his strength is in test prep, he delights in trivia and the anecdotal aspects of history and language. What sets Ian apart from other tutors is the priority he gives to foster and encourage the desire and curiosity to learn, emphasizing positive reinforcement and the belief that tests are designed to measure what students do know, rather than punish them for what they do not. He also enjoys cooking, biking, reading science fiction, and he’s a lifelong fan of Zabar’s.
Ian is currently offering virtual sessions which start at one hour and cover topics including building vocabulary, reading comprehension, algebra, geometry, exponents, percents and fractions, probability, and graphing equations.
Here’s what some happy parents have had to say!

Ian effortlessly adapted to each child’s individual strengths and personality. Ian makes the material understandable and enjoyable, across multiple topics, and my children enjoy working through challenges with Ian. They’ve also gained a lot of confidence in the process. Ian is a wealth of knowledge and my children remember Ian’s lessons long after, due to Ian’s use of fun anecdotes and examples. Ian is also a pleasure to work with, as he is consistently flexible and responsive to scheduling requests and changes in the course of the materials covered in the tutoring sessions. He has a very positive, can-do attitude. Highly recommend!”

Ian was very professional with his communication, timing, and scheduling. In fact, he was very flexible if there was a last minute change in scheduling. His teaching style was also professional and had very good communication skills to get a teenager to learn advanced courses and test taking techniques. I highly recommend Ian and would hire him again.”
